Honiara, Solomon Islands September 2017

Andrew Vane

Vaughan Poutawera and Andrew Vane spent a very busy week in Honiara, Solomon Islands teaching orthopaedic trainees at a Pacific Island Orthopaedic Association module. The PIOA and the teaching modules are organised and run by Des Soares, Brisbane. Sud Rao, from Hawkes Bay, was also involved in the teaching. Trainees from all over the pacific were present and were extremely motivated to learn. The week involved acute admission, patient presentation and discussion, teaching ward rounds, interactive lectures, examination technique, workshops and lots of discussion. Practical sessions included saw bones, external frames, fracture fixation, traction, casting and cementing hips. The trainees are progressing very well and will be providing great orthopaedic care throughout the Pacific.
