Vaughan Poutawera

Orthopaedic Surgeon

Vaughan practices at Tauranga and Grace Hospitals in Tauranga. Vaughan graduated from the University of Otago Medical School in 1999 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2008. Vaughan did orthopaedic fellowships at university hospitals in Toronto, Canada and Zurich Switzerland 2009-2010 before returning to New Zealand to take up his Specialist Consultant post with the Bay of Plenty District Health Board in 2011.  Vaughan is a general orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty interests in hip and knee replacement, revision arthroplasty, hip preservation surgery and pelvic trauma. Vaughan regularly travels to Samoa and Rarotonga to teach, mentor, consult and operate on orthopaedic patients, and is involved with the training of Pacific Island surgeons in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Vaughan is a member of the New Zealand Medical Assistance Team (NZMAT) and is involved with the ongoing development of NZMAT. Vaughan deployed to the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and Fiji after cyclone Winston in 2016. Vaughan is married to Brenda and three young children.
